Delbert, a native Texan, spent fifteen years in the insurance industry as a salesman and claims adjuster and eighteen years teaching elementary school, but found his true passion when he spent a week in his brother-in-law’s machine shop learning the basics of arc-welding.
The idea was to simply build some doorstops for his fellow teachers and develop a hobby to relax. As he picked up all kinds of cast aside pieces of metal, gears, and truck parts to build the door stops, a vision of more and bigger formed in his head. Two years later he left the classroom to pursue full time his new passion of metal sculpture.
Now with a 1000 square foot studio, an outdoor sculpture gallery and an ever growing collection of salvaged steel, Delbert continues to create flowers, critters and abstracts. They range in size from a few inches to ten feet and more. Some are painted with bright primary colors, while others are left in a natural state of rust.
Delbert’s sculptures have been a major attraction at several juried fine art festivals. His work was accepted into his first long term outdoor exhibit in 2005, in Downtown Arts and Historic District of Jasper, Texas. Several pieces were purchased and remain in the area. Since then Delbert’s large outdoor works have been accepted into other year long exhibitions.
